Twice The Price 'Blind Wine Tasting' 4wk Course in Preston
"How much should I really be spending to get a decent bottle of wine?" "Why is that wine so much more expensive than the others if they all come from the same place/are made from the same grape?" "Would I really be able to tell the difference if I splash out on a more expensive bottle, or should I just stick to my favourite which I know I like?"
Do any of these questions sound familiar? Well they do to me! Every week I hear questions just like this at the Wine School. People are fascinated, perhaps quite confused, and certainly a little cynical when it comes to understanding the different prices of wine.
This 4 week course will address this issue head-on, in the best way we know how- by tasting all of our wine BLIND without knowing the price. Each week we'll pick a popular white and red wine and taste 3 examples of each. One wine will cost £5, one wine will cost £10 and one will cost at least £20. But here's the killer question- WILL YOU BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE? And equally importantly- will you actually prefer the most expensive one? Some weeks possibly not.
Of course you'll be given plenty of guidance along the way. Every wine is a unique story, so before tasting we'll go through an overview of the wine in question, learning what the main considerations are when it comes to costing in each case. But the real excitement in the evening comes with the blind tasting; the opportunity to set aside prejudices that people might have once they know the cost of the wine, and just trust your own senses! On this course in many cases we'll be pitching Old World and New World against each other... best not to assume the Old World wines are the most expensive though.
Like all our 4 week courses, this is the perfect fit for someone who has been to a Wine School course before- perhaps you've done the World of Wine Course and you're wondering what to do next? But even if you're a complete beginner, you'll find the fun and relaxed approach to these evenings mean that all opinions are welcome! So if you're interested in learning a little more about blind tasting, or you're one of those people that puzzles over one bottle should cost £7.50 and another is £15, this is definitely the course for you!
Week 1: Italian Whites & Italian Reds: We're going to pick some famous names from Italy at roughly £5, £10 and £20. They may differ in grape and possibly style so we'll give you lots of hints along the way. Can you spot the £5 Fiano against the more expensive blends? Can you spot a generic Italian red against a Barolo or Supertuscan? Same idea, lots of clues.
Week 2: South Africam Chardonnay and Pinotage: South Africa is famous for its Cheni Blanc but also makes some serious Chardonnay as well as some good glugging plonk. Pinotage is a fascinating grape variety born of Pinot Noir and Cinsault parentage of which their are many and and varied examples. The high-end wines on this evening will surprise you!
Week 3: Rosé and Tempranillo: Rosé wines are usually viewed as fun wines, for parties and pub nights out so this is chance to take them seriously with some interesting valued examples. Tempranillo is considered the mainstay of Rioja wines these days but is produced throughout Spain and the RRest of the World in various guises. No Rioja here tonight!
Week 4: Southern Rhone Reds and Whites. Cotes du Rhone usually conjours up images of full bodied reds but they make white too! We're going to taste 3 whites and 3 reds that either come from the Southern Rhone or mimic the style using the same grape varieties.
